Lubbock 70.3 sees Texans atop the podium
Hello endurance athletes,
Did you note that we had some rain in Texas this week? 95 degrees never felt so good. Hopefully it stays around for a bit … but I’m not holding my breath. Still, it felt good to go for a run in temperatures that didn’t feel like I was in the air fryer. Friday the high here in The Woodlands will only be 83, sure there are thunderstorms in the forecast, but we aren’t turning down rain here. Although maybe not the frozen kind we had earlier this week.
On with the news…
Ironman Lubbock 70.3
Racers at the Lubbock half Ironman distance race caught a break Sunday with high temps dropping from 99 Saturday to 86 on Sunday. Still pretty warm, but probably felt like quite the relief. Temps had gotten as high as 103 just two weeks previous.
Ryan Siebert, who was in contention until a flat ruined his race last year, took home the win. He’s a coach with PlayTri in Dallas and a former member of the Air Force’s elite Pararescue unit. He finished in 4:07:01. HIs race report on the Instragram post below.
On the women’s side, El Paso’s Kelly Ann McKechnie broke the tape in 4:39:18 for the win, coming back to the sport after giving birth to a daughter just about 9 months ago. She is also a coach and a former USA Swim Team Olympic trials competitor. This race qualifies her for her second trip to the 70.3 world championships in St. George, Utah, where she will join Siebert, who also qualified for his second world championship race.
Lots of Instagram goodness from Lubbock.
Texans at Western States Endurance Run
It was another epic Western States 100, with a closely fought women’s race. Ruth Croft from New Zealand won in 17:21:30, the third-fastest time ever by a woman pulling away late in the race, topping Ailsa McDonald by 25 minutes and Marianne Hogan by 44 minutes. Hogan qualified for the race by getting her golden ticket at the Bandera 100K in January.
The men’s winner, Adam Peterman, out of Montana, was ahead for most of the race and won with a 15:13:48. It was Peterman’s first 100-mile race. He topped long-time Utah pro Hayden Hawks by 34 minutes. Behind him was Ohio’s Arlen Glick, 9 minutes later.
For Texans at States, here’s how the crew did.
John Farris from Ft Worth was the top Texan in 26:31:27. Farris was sponsored by The Active Joe for his entry.
Next was Steve Smith from The Woodlands in 27:04:43.
Next up, a couple of golden hour finishers for the 30-hour capped race.
John Studebaker from Forth Worth was the third Texan in 29:34:08.
Finally, Christopher Smith out of Austin finished in 29:43:16.
The other two participants, Elijah Slate and Scott Towle, dropped at miles 34.4 and 30.3 respectively.
